Why do all the big buildings have a red light on top of it?

Aircraft warning lights are high-intensity lighting devices attached to tall structures as collision avoidance measures. Such devices make structures more visible to aircraft, and are usually used at night, although they may be used during the day. These lights need to be of sufficient brightness to be visible for miles around the structure.

They have red light to avoid collision from aeroplane and helicopter, by putting red light pilot gets notification that there is some object. This is called aviation light or Aircraft warning lights. Not even in buildings but any high rise structure who's height is more than 45 meter (not very much sure about height) must have aviation lighting.

As specified by Annex 14 of ICAO regulations, Low Intensity Obstruction Lights should be used to warn the presence of obstacles up to 45m height, such as telecommunication towers, wind turbines, chimneys, cranes, buildings and other structures.

Low Intensity Obstruction Lights are the simplest devices according to ICAO standards and they have the following characteristics and uses:

  • Type A (intensity >10cd, red steady burning) can be used alone;
  • Type B (intensity >32cd, red steady burning), can be used either alone or in combination with medium intensity obstacle lights Type B, Type AB or with high intensity obstacle lights Type AB;
  • Type E (intensity >32cd, red flashing), can be used either alone or in combination with medium intensity obstacle lights, Type B. Flashing rate will be set at the same rate of other flashing beacons installed on the structure.
(Options: Dual Type(1 duty & 1 stand-by), Solar Powered)

We CDT supply the Low Intensity Obstruction Light, it has an advanced lighting optic that uses multiple high intensity LEDs for efficient operation. The obstruction light offers an ultra-bright light that is energy efficient and cost effective lighting solution.
The obstruction light is available in universal AC, DC and solar configurations with automatic day night operations and an alarm for remote monitoring making it the ideal product for remote locations or areas with limited access.

Night Marking Red Obstruction Light System for Transmission Tower

ICAO compliant MIOL red flashing solar obstruction lights are an integrated solution including a high-efficiency LED light source, solar panels and battery. In remote areas, where 110V or 220V is not available except at extremely high cost, solar-powered FAA & ICAO obstruction lights have become the preferred and often necessary solution for marking utility transmission towers, telecom towers, wind farm testing, airports, and other tall structures. Tapping into solar energy is simpler and greener, saves money, and keeps lights off the grid. The system is designed as a compact, all-in-one solar system, completely self contained for easy installation. The high efficiency, compact design provides end users with a lightweight, maintenance free power solution, requiring minimal surface area for installation. The system is ideal for remote airstrips where hard-wired infrastructure is unavailable.
